Weslaco's Favorite Saturday

Every March, Downtown Weslaco closes the streets and opens them back up to something better. The annual Texas Onion Fest drew locals and visitors alike for a full day of community, culture, and a little friendly competition, all in honor of one of the Rio Grande Valley's most iconic agricultural contributions.
Rooted in Real History
The Texas 1015 Onion was developed right here in Weslaco by Dr. Leonard Pike, a horticulture professor at Texas A&M University. The name came from the suggested planting date of October 15, and the onion went on to become the official State Vegetable of Texas. Grown only in the Rio Grande Valley, it is a crop that belongs to this region in every sense, and the festival has been celebrating that fact since 1989.
A Full Day Downtown
Sponsored by the Weslaco Area Chamber of Commerce, the event ran 10:15 AM to 10:15 PM and packed a lot into those hours. Live music filled the air all day across multiple stages, with Grupo Siggno headlining alongside performances by Ricky Naranjo y Los Gamblers, Grupo Zendero, Rustic Rose, and more. Between sets, attendees browsed the vendor market, sampled onion-inspired food and treats, enjoyed the dancing horse show, took in the classic car show, and cheered on competitors in the Onion Eating Contest.
TVCR in the Community
As the 2026 Texas Onion Fest Corporate Sponsor, Texas Valley Clinical Research was proud to be part of the day. Our booth gave us the chance to connect with neighbors, share information about our current studies, and talk through how clinical research benefits the communities we serve. Conversations like those are exactly why we show up to events like this. The Rio Grande Valley is who we work for, and days like Saturday are a good reminder of that.
What It Adds Up To
More than a festival, the Texas Onion Fest is a reminder of what grounds this community: agricultural heritage, local pride, and the kind of turnout that makes an event worth repeating. Thanks to the Chamber for another well-run celebration, and to everyone who stopped by our booth. We’ll see you next year!
